    Goodbye Wyze, hello Tapo!
I’ll be writing this on all the Tapo cameras I’ve recently purchased. (4x C110, 2x C210, 2x C520WS)These are flawless, amazing, and so far ahead of Wyze it’s not even funny. They are massively affordable, truly need no subscription, have fantastic features in their app, can record locally to an SD card; everything you would want. Coming from Wyze (see more below), I didn’t know that cameras were supposed to act like this. I assumed, at Wyze prices, that I was getting what I paid for. But when I finally had enough constant stress and spent the money to change to Tapo… my life has been changed. Seriously, I probably added years to my life not being so stressed out all the time because my cameras never, ever worked right. These do, and I cannot say it enough times… if you’re currently using Wyze then get one of these. Use it for a week side-by-side and tell me what you think.Super light, have a few of mine mounted with ‘hard plastic velcro’ (3M Dual Lock). Setup is fast and easy, and works right away. Don’t have to do it over and over again (Wyze). Clarity is superb – 1440p quality. Night vision is phenomenal. Don’t really care about ‘color’ night vision – but my outdoor ones do have it. And one of the best parts is Tapo is part of TP-Link. What does that mean? TP-Link has been around for a very long time, and they specialize in networking equipment, LoL. So yeah, if you want a reliable camera on your network, who better to trust than a networking company.TLDR: Don’t waste your time on any other brand. Buy these. I promise you won’t regret it.About Wyze:If you’re like me and never wanted to spend thousands on home monitoring and security, then you may have stumbled upon Wyze cameras. At first, they were amazing – very affordable with no subscription necessary. And they worked. Over time, that changed drastically as they ventured into making everything else on the planet instead of focusing on their roots (cameras). They funded that stuff by changing to a subscription policy. And in their haste had multiple security breaches and problems such as other people viewing cameras that aren’t theirs. This is of course while the software and hardware has become so incredibly bad that they’re unusable. I mean, they actually do not function 92% of the time. Whether it’s freezing, not connecting, stuttering so bad that it looks like a PowerPoint presentation, app for closing, etc.

Perfect for high performance/low effort installation
I’ve had this camera for about a week now, and so far it has been great. After opening the package and setting it all up went relatively smooth. There was a small problem with having the device connect to my phone but when I just reset the pairing process it eventually worked itself out.I bought a 512 gig sd card that is installed in the back of the camera. Getting to that area was a little dumb because I had to turn a certain way to get to it, and I had to install it while the device was on so the card could be formatted. It says you cannot pre-format or use sd cards that have been formatted from another device so you have to get one new. That’s not the biggest problem because a 512 gb sd card is recording about a months worth of video on 24/7 record mode and it’s supposed to just reuse that data after it runs out so I’ll be curious to see how it runs when I’m out of space and it has to record over previously recorded video. Some of the zones you make for detecting things gets warped after the camera has moved around a lot. I don’t know why, but it always seems to fix itself after a while. This camera has a lot of features I didn’t even know of when I got it that I think makes this a no brainer for first time camera owners likeyself. It moves and tracks things when it’s detected. So you can set it up to see a wide range of things and it will follow them up to your doorway so you always see that object it detected which I think is incredible for a device like this, and the price. It works great with my phone and my phone is nearly 4 years old.Installation was as easy as can be. Not a problem thereLastly, I did get the Alexa box that it’s compatible with and it was super easy getting that to work together. Only problem with that is after about 5 minutes or so of having the camera being shown on the screen of my Alexa, the camera latency seems to tank and it will need a refresh. But otherwise is extremely great. This product is great. I stand by all five stars I give it, even with it’s very very tiny flaws.

    Amazing Features, Lackluster Image Quality
This is a very powerful camera with a ton of features for the price. It’s easy to use and control via the app, which I run on an iPad connected via my WiFi. You can read all about these features in the description, so let me focus on the biggest gripe I have with the camera – image quality. Here’s the thing, I think the camera hardware itself (lens and sensor) are actually pretty good. It has good color reproduction and excellent light sensitivity. Where the camera as a unit fails for me is the aggressive compression used to create a video stream. I can clearly see compression artifacts and very noticeable macroblocking. And it seems that still images are just screenshots from the video feed rather than actual still images captured from the sensor itself. If the manufacturer is reading this, consider adding an option to adjust image quality / compression to a future firmware update, along with still image snapshots directly from the sensor rather than grabbing from the video feed. You could easily turn this into a 5 star camera by buffing the image quality to something closer to what your sensor is capable of.

Excellent Products, Outstanding Customer ServiceAfter starting with a competitive (and yes, cheaper) competitor’s camera, I decided to try Tapo because I have several TP-Link devices and a WiFi router already installed in my house, and they have performed flawlessly.Good decision! My first Tapo camera choice was a wired C510W, which I wanted for our front porch, This Pan/Tilt camera is very well constructed, and easy to install. (Tapo even provided an extra screw. Who hasn’t had a dropped/lost screw turn an easy install into an unfinished nightmare?) Once installed and connected, it worked almost exactly as expected, and provided excellent video. One minor shortcoming is that the “person detect” function applies some sort of AI processing after the camera has detected motion, so you cannot easily limit recordings only to people. Turning on motion detection means capturing any movement first, and then post-processing to see if people were captured. Generated lots of recordings without people in my case. Still, really great camera controls and filters and settings to help minimize false event recording, which I did eventually master. Good notification tools and easy controls and access to review recorded video without wasting a lot of time searching. EXCELLENT camera!Another good indication of the company’s thinking is the web-based optional service provided free for the first month with the camera purchase. When the one-month trial ends, the service is terminated by default (!), so you are not automatically enrolled in the service with recurring costs every month. Easy to subscribe and keep it going, of course. My second camera was a fully wireless C425 with an integrated PIR motion detector to specifically identify and capture people or pets, to monitor comings and goings of animals in our back yard.Again, easy to install and connect, and again, a spare screw for the fumble-fingered amon us. The PIR makes recording of animals and people a breeze. The battery life is very good so far, although I have a lot of squirrels in the yard, so the camera wakes up often. Still, after three weeks of recording squirrels abd rabbits, the battery is still at 83%, more than meeting my expectations.Totally satisfied with the PIR funcionality and the camera features overall. Another W=EXCELLENT camera. As a final note, Tapo’s customer service has been simply outstanding. Quick, knowledgable, relevant responses, and an obvious commitment to customer satisfaction make this arguably the best company I’ve ever dealt with when it comes to customer support. This review is uncompensated, and posted to each of the two cameras mentioned.
