A Keeper -> Excellent Security Camera that is feature Rich
I’ve tried 10-12 Security Cameras and this as well as the REOLINK RLC-511WA – 5MP Security Camera, that they discontinued after my return, were the best. The only issue with the 511WA was the mounting style, it needed to be improved as it did not hold position. Hopefully they improve it and reintroduce it as I believe it’s picture quality, ability to zoom X5 & day-time night shots with white light & acting like a security light are the advantages over this model, RLC-510WA.The advantage of this model is:1. being black – Less obvious | inconspicuous2. All outdoor cameras should have an option for dark brown or black. White stands out. Depends if you want people to know you have them.3. The absence of night-time lighting makes it inconspicuous or invisible to others at night. Less chance of being deactivated or plug pulled.4. One of the best in the industry of developing time range vs. sensitivity level. During the day the sensitivity should be mid-hi to High. During the night this would record 2 times a minute for the whole evening due to bugs flying. In the winter you could fill up an SD card 256 GB in 2 days. With the sensitivity function I set a range from 6 am-7 PM, then 7PM-Midnight & Midnight to 6 AM. This significantly reduces false activities such as fire flys, bugs, spiders, etc. This took my timeline from looking like all black, recording 2-times/minute to only action, motion & light changing events. Now my 256 GB card can go 25 days.5. Designed for you to only use as an: a. Home security system with your own network & storage devices or **b. or only with an SD card without Cloud subscription & no Ads – the best in the industry.6. Includes the best PC desktop software that can startup with your PC automatically in live view.7. The PC & Mobile Playback feature allows you to isolate Time, General motion, people & Cars. Beta for animals is coming. This works excellent. A few times at night some cars fall into the general motion but you get a feel that it’s a car when the motion timeline icons show some light in the timeline clip. I just may have to adjust sensitivity at night to get them to go into the correct basket. But it’s only a few.8. You have the ability to do time laps photography. Would be good on sky-scraper of an entire city, a work site building from the ground up or even a storm.9. Viewing options have 3 settings: Clear, balanced & fluent. Or high quality to low quality. I assume is to save data when viewing over Cell | Mobile data.10. The Brightness & Brightness & Shadow settings are important to setup correctly to have contrast during the day & night time to optimize the capture of cars & people & not noise.11. Detection alarm: a. The detection zones alows you to zero out trees in the front or neighbrs yard that my trigger the motion to capture video. by blocking them out, you have less false triggers. Easy to use the paint & erase features. You may also want to blot out a birds nest on the porch of an active nest. b. Sensitivity motion allows you to setup more than 3 sensitivity time zones. Like daytime & night time & other? to avoid false detection. One of the best features that make most Security cameras fail in my opinion. c. Smart Detection – Sets sensitivity for People & cars. Works well.12. Has the ability to alert you thru notification, e-mail with clip of Picture or video or FTP for All motion, cars only or people only. Excellent feature to isolate each components.13. To sum up: This camera & it’s brother if they come out with a new & improved mounting are Feature rich, for do-it-yourself-ers & a definite KEEPER.

Can’t see facial details at night, but background looks fine
App is great, and works fine with Blue Iris. Web interface is off by default but can be easily enabled, will still work fine completely disconnected from the internet and cloud, and supports ONVIF. This means it can be used on a private network independently of Reolink app or NVR. Definitely recommend using the 5 ghz wifi band, while shorter range, because it is more reliable and less easily disrupted/less crowded than the longer range 2.4 ghz that it replaces. The weak point will be the wifi router, especially if you do not have an outdoor wifi access point. It does support a lot of additional features (and “AI”) which I am not interested in, and I did not evaluate.Crucially, however, I cannot find a setting to enable WDR (wide dynamic range), so facial features cannot be distinguished at night unless the subject is standing within 2 feet of the camera. Then the background is darkened and only the foreground is visible. This could lead to problems with nearby spiders and moths blocking out the whole scene, but I haven’t had the camera set up long enough to tell. With Dahua and other common IP cameras, this is not a problem. The background and foreground are independently balanced when WDR is turned on, which makes the cameras work in a much wider range of lighting situations where you have unwanted backlight, headlights, etc. It’s still good night vision for pointing out into the yard, but you aren’t going to get identifying details needed by the police if mounted above the entrance/garage.Note that this model does NOT have color night vision (which is becoming more prevalent). Also note they should call it “low-light color” since it requires a tiny amount of visible light, does not work in total darkness like infrared. But the lens and sensor on the ColorX models are larger/better, plus some digital magic, so it’s entry-level color night vision, modestly more expensive but a nice feature. You don’t get quite the feature set offered on the more technical cameras, but the upside is the Reolink app is night and day better than the others I’ve tried in this category like Foscam, or especially Ring. Just spend slightly more and go for a Reolink with ColorX if you are having trouble deciding.

I like Reolink products. So far I used cable ones. This one is also good. I wish I bought solar battery powered one.

This camera was chosen as my in-laws required continuous recording as they have a bad sneaky neighbour damaging their property. The battery operated camera’s that someone else recommended were unable to capture anything useful, and there are too many distractions – trees to use motion-record.This camera was easy to set up, did not require any cloud account or personal details to be entered. I chose to record on a 256 Gbyte Samsung Pro Endurance micro SD card at 30FPS. This gives just over 7 days continuous recording. The old recordings are overwritten with the newer recordings as expected.I chose the Samsung Endurance micro SD as I believe that it has been designed for this purpose.Remote viewing is automatically enabled if you use the iphone application. Reolink must provide some kind of DDNS service so the camera streams to client unless you have purposely blocked outgoing connections on your router. The camera is just as described in the manual so I thought I’d add a couple of things that might be useful: – All recordings can be downloaded directly from the camera- SD card in 2 minute clips to the iphone as H264 MP4 files. No need to remove the micro SD card. I believe that it would also work on an Android phone.- If you open a web browser to the camera on the local network you get a much better interface and can download complete clips (either 5 minute or 2 minute at night (it seems) and do multiple selections- There is no application for Windows or Linux that I know of to view remotely, but if you have a macbook Air you can get the Reolink app and connect to the camera remotely which is great for most things (except that I cannot work out how to speed up the replay which you can do in the Iphone app). It appears to be similar as the local network web browser but I’m unable to recheck this.A great camera at a great price!
