Amazing device, it only needs software to catch up
Okay so first of all, this unit is great. It includes a temperature sensor, light sensor (measures lux in the environment), and of course a motion sensor. It operates off of batteries which, after more than a month, still shows as basically 100% in the app. The batteries are 2x AAA, so easy to replace when needed. Since it’s battery operated, you can put it anywhere without any install unless you want to permanently mount it somewhere. You can adjust the sensitivity of the sensors so they trigger actions more (or less). From the Hue app, you can set how you want it to behave. Only want to enable it when the room is dark (determined by the light sensor and whatever trigger value you set)? No problem. Only enable it after 10pm? Sure. It’s quite powerful. There are some missing features that could be implemented though, some of which do have workarounds. And accessing the raw data (sensor states and values, etc) is actually quite easy with the Hue Hub since it has an accessible REST API. So here’s my situation, and an example of how I was able to work around a missing feature that I wanted. The Goal: This motion sensor sits in my bedroom to turn on all of the lights when someone walks in or is active in the room. It needs to “see” most of the room because I don’t want dead spots where the lights just shut off because it can’t see I’m in there. However, I don’t want it to ALWAYS turn on the lights when it senses movement, because even at the lowest sensitivity setting it “sees” when I move in my sleep and causes the lights to come on.The Missing Feature: While you can turn the motion sensing of this unit on and off via its settings in the Hue app, there is currently no way to completely disable the sensor. Sure, you can say “From 10pm to 6am, when you detect motion, do nothing.” That effectively gives you the same result. But it doesn’t work for the problem I’m trying to solve, because what if I go to bed late? What if I get up early? What if my fiancée wants to sleep in longer than me and I inadvertently trigger the lights when I get up?The Solution: My house primarily utilizes the HomeKit ecosystem (i.e., Apple Home) and it integrates with Hue allowing you to complete some actions/automations/shortcuts with calls to Siri or by activating them manually via the Apple Home app. It doesn’t support the motion sensor directly, but I set up a Raspberry Pi running Homebridge to create a “dummy switch” with the name “Motion Sensor”. I then created two shortcuts – one that submits a REST API call to the Hue bridge to completely disable the motion sensor (leaving the others intact), and one to enable it. I then set the “Motion Sensor” switch to call one of those shortcuts whenever the switch is toggled. I added it to the Bedroom zone, so at that point I could enable/disable the motion sensor with Siri: “Siri, turn off the bedroom motion sensor.”) Apple Home already has a couple of default Scenes that you can modify to suit your needs, one of these is “Good Night”. I added the “Motion Sensor” dummy switch to this scene with instructions to toggle it off.So now, I can say “Siri, good night” and it will turn off all of the lights in the house, turn off the TV and fan, and disable the motion sensor in the bedroom. I then created a similar “good morning” that turns the motion sensor back on (among other things) when we’re both awake.

    It just works.
I’m no expert but I have been toying around with home automation slowly over the years. I wanted to do simple motion activated led strip light for a stair way. I have experimented with a few other ones but found that for ease of setup and reliability it’s the way to go.

You get more then what you pay for
Not only is this is motion sensor, which works great, but it’s also A light sensor and temp sensor. It shows up in both the Alexa app and Apple Home with an added temp sensor that shows the temp of that room. Phillips Hue always delivers!!!

    Plays well with Apple
I bought several Hue products to act as a system for automating my household lights in certain rooms for daily use, & also to give the illusion that someone is at home when no one is. The products included the one for which I am posting this review, and I will be posting the identical review for the other products I bought. The products involved are the White Ambiance Decorative Candle 40 W dimmable, the White Ambiance 60W Dimmable, the Dimmer Switch with Remote, the Motion Sensor, and the Hue Hub. I use these products over an eero based WiFi system, with the Apple HomeKit app operating on my Apple TV4. I control them remotely from my iPhone and my iPad, using the Home app from Apple and the Hue app. (You really need to use both to set the system up, because it maximizes your options to do so.)Setting up the system was quite easy, and all of the accessories work as one would expect. Nevertheless, there is room for improvement, which is why I’ve rated all of them, together, as 4 rather than 5 stars. The biggest problem I have with the system concerns our chandeliers. Both of the ones we have are dimmable, and one of them is controlled by switches at two different doorways. Both of them take 3 light bulbs, and neither of them will function reliably if all three of the bulbs are Hue bulbs. The problem is that when all three of the bulbs are Hue bulbs, they flicker on & off, rendering it impossible to use the chandelier at all. This is a known issue with certain light fixtures which are dimmable, and Phillips is upfront with the likelihood that this could occur. Unfortunately, you won’t know if you have the problem till you try it out. The best solution is to rewire the chandeliers so that they are not dimmable. But pending having that done, I discovered that the living room chandelier works just fine if one light socket is left empty. Not true for the dining room chandelier, but for that one, I discovered that if two of the bulbs are Hue, and the third is a refrigerator light bulb, the flickering does not occur. The problem is that in order to use the scheduling & remote features for the Hue bulbs, the socket the bulbs are in have to be switched on all the time, which means that in the dinning room, the refridgerator light winds up being on all the time.A minor problem I have with Hue lights is that they are all 60 watts (or less). This is not bright enough to read by. For instance, I had three 100 watt bulbs in both our chandeliers, and even when I get three Hues to operate correctly in them, it’s not quite bright enough. I’m hoping that Phillips is working on higher watt versions of the Hue bulbs. The remote device and the motion detector work just fine. Oddly, the motion detector also gives the temperature at the place where it is positioned. For what it’s worth, the ordinary Hue bulbs will work outside even when the temperature drops as much as 20 degrees below zero. At least, that’s been my experience after about a month of use involving a lot of subzero temperatures.

Easy to setup and I put in Laundry Room because light switch is in a weird spot. I set the occupancy timeout to 10 seconds, which is the fastest. I set automation mode to restart and have three triggers… depending which one there is an action: I turn the light on from motion detected trigger, turn light on from switch trigger delay 5 min and turn light off, and turn light on from motion clear trigger (eg. after its 10 sec of no motion it detects), which starts the 5 minute delay and turns light off. Any of these three triggers will stop current automation and restarts it again.Mounting is simple. It is magnetic so I have it stuck on a metal curtain hanger hook above window so no screws required. The mount also has a hole in it and can be screwed in with the included screw and wall anchors. The sensor then magnetically attaches to this little mount which I believe can be positioned at different angles but I just stuck mine straight in them mount because the angle is fine for a room.

This works with Alexa, and is sufficiently small to be unnoticeable to unwelcome intruders.
