Thread technology
What is Thread, and why is it important to Matter and the smart home?
Thread is a wireless protocol specifically built for IoT devices. It’s designed to make them work faster, have fewer points of failure, use less power, and communicate with each other more seamlessly.
A low-power, low-bandwidth mesh networking protocol that uses the 802.15.4 radio technology, Thread is similar to existing smart home protocols Zigbee and Z-Wave. But unlike them, it doesn’t need a central hub or bridge. Instead, Thread devices can talk directly to each other. By cutting out the middle man, Thread can be faster, especially over large networks.
One of benefits of using Thread devices is that you will have fewer devices using your WIFI network. Also, if one device in your Thread network fails, another device will step up and fill in the roles of the failed device. This is the self-healing feature of Thread.

Bricked after a week
TL;DR: avoid these at least until Onvis can figure out the firmware.I should have listened to other reviews but I wanted to try these myself. The setup was smooth and the plugs worked well for the first week. Then I noticed they both went to a âno responseâ state. Tried to unplug them and nothing. Tried to reset them and still nothing. So I did some research online. Looks like it was a know issue and Onvis released a firmware upgrade. So I tried to do that as well.Worth to also mention that their app is also terrible. But anyway, I tried to follow the crappy update video they published to YouTube but wasnât able to do the upgrade. Both plugs, no matter how many times I tried to reset them, they are stuck in a âno responseâ state. I guess they are bricked or something.Anyway maybe they are fixable but I donât have anymore time to waste on these âsmartâ plugs. Should have bought Eve instead.

reliable so far, very responsive and low profile
I bought this cautiously since it’s previous version doesn’t have good rating on Amazon, and this says it is “upgraded” model. It has been about a week and they seem reliable, haven’t become unresponsive or disconnected from my apple homekit app, I double checked in my Xfinity Router App, they are not connected to wifi2.4G, but I am also not seeing them in my Eve app thread network. They are definitely far more responsive that wifi smart plugs and as fast as my Eve thread smart plug, so I am guessing they are really using thread network, I disabled bluetooth on my phone and they still work fine, unplug, plug back in, and they reconnect to the network very quickly.Overall so far so good, but I am keeping the original box until my last day of Amazon return eligibility to make sure they don’t become unreliable, and will return the second they fall off the network even once! will update this review if anything changes! They are definitely not full thread device (they won’t extend your thread network like Eve smart plug), but they are priced really well compared to Eve plugs and seem to be as responsive! fingers crossed I won’t need to return them! Adding to apple homekit was super easy and smooth, just make sure you follow the instruction to press the button for 10second for first time.I also love that they are very low profile and don’t take up the entire outlet, I have a fairly large night motion sensor plug on the outlet, and they are still very well fit underneath!

No Responseâ¦
Every single day. These things just canât stay connected to the thread network. None of my other thread devices have this issue. In fact, ONVISâs HomeKit-over-thread devices are rock solid! But not these. Itâs just so annoying to have to unplug this thing once per day to get it to respond again. Defeats the whole purpose of having a smart plug. Firmware update helped a bit but still having this issue.

Randomly flickers
Plugs seem to work fine other than the fact that while they are turned on, they will randomly flicker off for a half second every so often. Sometimes a couple times in a row, sometimes every 20 minutes or so. Super annoying.

Works perfectly
Matter over Thread Smart plugs! I just bought by fifth. Have been using these daily for nearly a year now, first through SmartThings and now through HomeAssistant. Never had an issue. Highly recommend!

They donât consistently stay paired
The number of times Iâve had to reset and repair, honestly, itâs not worth the trouble. If they stayed paired theyâd be a nice value add to the house. As is, Iâm going to replace them.

Good product
Easy to set up, works great. Moved on from Wemo products which started getting erratic.

Works better after latest firmware update
Docked a star because itâs a real pain to update the firmware. It can literally take 15 minutes to update one plug and when you have about 20 of them thatâs a few days worth of updating firmware and thatâs if the process works on the first attempt. Other than this the plugs have been stable and responsive since the latest firmware update.
