    Great smart home lighting solution
Bottom line: great smart lighting solution and far more capable than smart bulbs and not much more expensive. Start here if you’re looking to add smart lights to your home. The rest of the review discusses smart lighting and why Lutron is a great product worth your investment.I’ve been slowly integrating smart devices into my life, and lighting was my first point of entry. Initially, the plan was to use relatively inexpensive smart bulbs with a SmartThings hub, but I found this sorely lacking in features and usability. The major problem with smart bulbs is that the light fixture must be turned on for the smart bulb to work, but guests and family members who don’t know this would turn the light off at the switch (or fixture), thereby rendering the bulb useless. Dealbreaker, particularly if you are relying on a smart bulb for security purposes (ie to turn on and off to simulate someone at home). This problem is remedied by smart switches, like the Lutron Caseta, that replace your existing switches. I first purchased GE and Leviton z-wave switches due to their integration with SmartThings but quickly learned that installing these switches–particularly in a 3-way context (ie two switches controlling one light)–is semi-challenging for someone with no electrical background and, more importantly, impossible without a neutral wire. My house has mostly 3-way switches controlling various groups of recessed ceiling lights, but very few of the existing switches have neutral wires (my house was built in 1950). Thus, the z-wave switches wouldn’t work for most of my lights. The few that did work I found worked fairly well, though glitches with smart scheduling were not uncommon. I attribute those errors to SmartThings, not the switches, but still a downside.Enter Lutron Caseta. These do not require a neutral wire AND are significantly easier to install in a 3-way context because the included Pico remote replaces your original wired secondary switch but need not actually be wired. In other words, you only have to wire one switch instead of two to complete your 3-way install. The Lutron app that you can use to control these lights is easy to use and has reliably executed lighting schedules for all of my various lights without fail. Lutron’s proprietary RF signal seems far more reliable than the z-wave switches working with SmartThings; I’ve never had an issue. Also, the integration with Amazon Echo is awesome and works more reliably with Lutron Caseta than it did with SmartThings (again, I believe this is a SmartThings issue, but still relevant to a decision between z-wave and Lutron Caseta switches). Though I’m still not completely comfortable shouting lighting commands to Alexa when I have friends or family around, I use voice control to turn off the lights every night when I go to bed and haven’t had any issues. Homekit works well, too, but there’s no reason to use it if you have an Echo nearby.I’ve found the Lutron Caseta switches work perfectly. The dimming function is good but not great; I wish the dimmers brought the light down a little more than they do, but that could be related to the bulbs I’m using rather than the dimmers (I don’t know). Visually, I like the way the switch and included face plate looks. I also bought the mounting kit for the Pico remote and found it works fine, though I had some trouble getting the remote to sit square and flush in the face plate…it’s something I notice but I doubt visitors would ever see. As others have said, the Smart Bridge must connect to your router via a wired ethernet cable rather than wi-fi. This seems dated, but perhaps it provides a more reliable, responsive experience…which is a fair trade-off for the slight inconvenience of a wired connection.Overall this is a great product that I definitely recommend for anyone interested in adding some brains to their home lighting. I was a little hesitant to add another smart home ecosystem (and another app on my phone!) to the mix, but I don’t regret doing so. Integration with Amazon Echo, Homekit, Nest, ecobee, IFTTT, Logitech and other smart home systems makes the Lutron Caseta set-up even more robust and future-proof.

    Awesome Smart Home Tech
Installation:Installation was a breeze for the most part, however for working with a 3way implementation the directions did not come with this packaging and I did have to get on Lutron website to find them. Found that the directions were vastly similar, but not identical, to the majestro product line which these Caseta switches were replacing. Also NO COMMON WIRE NEEDED, oh this is so nice for a smart switch product line! Lutron, I tip my hat to you! Bravo!!!General Impression:After trying several brands and having mixed to horrible results I decided to try the Lutron Caseta line. Well now my house is filled with the line. Absolutely wonderful product line with awesome Alexa integration. The integration was seamless once enabling the skill via the Alexa app. I do recommend this system. Since the installation it has been ROCK SOLID. No major issues with firmware upgrade, there has been zero lost connectivity issues and/or switches not responding. The product is absolutely prime time ready unlike so many of the competitors out there.Initially I was on the fence against having another smart home product that required a hub but at the same time this tech isn’t impeding on my WIFI coverage and also has a very surprising range in my 2,200 sq ft home. The hub itself is sleek and looks nice sitting my shelf o tech things.I Cannot Break It:I’ve done rigorous testing with the product trying to cause a failure and have had no issues. Testing has including loss of power and ETH connection several times over. It always comes back online. The only thing that I can kinda gripe but not really, is the time the hub takes to come back online with the app when power is hard lost. It can be upwards of 5 minutes, but all in all. That is the only thing I can truly find wrong with the hub. Compared to previous experiences with other vendors this is by far the most well construed smart switch ecosystem I’ve ever had the joy of playing with. The App:The App is very well designed and works perfectly. It easy to add custom schedules and the switches to the hub via the app. Overall a 5 star experience there. Other competitors have some of the most awful apps that I’ve ever used. However Lutron has set the bar! It is fast, it is responsive and most importantly it is STABLE!Wish List! The only thing that I would want out of the product line is an all in one fan/light smart switch. This type of switch is truly lacking from the smart switch market and living in the southern states of the United States there are ceiling fans in all rooms. This is my last great hurdle for an all in one smart switch ecosystem. Currently this product line, as of 08/23/2019, does offer a fan control switch but it does not control the light. You have to have a dual gang box and install two switches, one for the fan and one for the light. This is less than ideal for my situation.OverallI highly recommend this product line, it has been headache and frustration free since installing and I’ve been adding to the lutron ecosystem gradually and now have 8 switches working like a smart home dream come true.

Works great – love it! The associated app works great as well. Easy to control the lights from my cell phone anywhere in the world through the WiFi bridge. So far I have Lutron switches in 3 rooms – very pleased. Price was competitive.

We have about 9 Caseta switches, 1 bridge. It’s amazing how much it’s easy to program.. For instance, we setup for all lights to turn off if both my wife and I leave the house. We also setup the lights in the kids room to turn off every morning at 9:00am (Since they leave the lights on when they go to school). Being able to dim the lights using apple HomeKit is what made me go for Caseta. Love the fact that we can also control the lights with Alexa !
