Amazing Image Quality!
I had this camera for about two weeks, and it’s been a great addition to my home security system. I wanted to add another camera to use as a pet cam to keep an eye on my cat while I’m out. The Foscam 5MP Wi-Fi Pet Cam was a great addition. It’s very dependable, and the image is amazing! Clear during the day and at night. It’s compact and the response rate to access it on my phone is immediate and faster than other competitor cams I’ve used in the past. The security camera is extremely easy to use and is a simple plug and play setup. Connect it to the Foscam app and you’re good! I also found it very convenient on the multiple ways you can record live footage. You can use their cloud storage, a micro-SD card, record on your phone or download their pc application to set up as a DVR on your pc. I tried all four, and all are very dependable and clear. Another feature that I like is being able to pan/tilt and zoom the camera from my phone. This is very nice if you have to adjust your camera to focus on a particular event or animal. They also have AI detection when paired with their cloud storage which allows you to identify known/unknown people or objects. I also own an Echo show and it automatically integrated with my Show. All I have to say, Alexa, Show “Laundry Room” and it displays quickly. So overall, great security/pet camera, easy setup process and great video quality!! Very happy with this purchase!! Another great product from Foscam!

A great little security camera for the price!
Takeaway: The Foscam R5 is a great little security camera for the price.* INSTALLATION: Initial account and wireless setup was a no-brainer. A couple of setup methods exist; I used the Foscam APP and camera QR code. The only tricky part for me, and this depends on your WiFi setup, was remembering how to temporarily disable the 5GHz channel on my router to force my phone and the camera both to the same 2.4Ghz one. The instructions are quite clear on the need to do this.* WIRELESS: The connection seemed quite robust, and I never missed having the 5GHz support.* VIDEO: The 5MP video images rendered are much superior to 1080p cameras. I did notice that video clips saved to the cloud were of a lower resolution (1024×728) than those recorded locally to the micro-SD card (2560×1920).* MOTION DETECTION: This worked well, comparable to other more costly security cameras I have used. The device provides type detection locally (human/pet/etc) which was usually correct but sometimes fooled. There is also support for cloud-based type detection with more types (e.g. package delivery), but I did not test that since I don’t plan to use the cloud services long-term.* ADVANCED FEATURES: The R5 supports Onvif and NAS connections, which I found to work well with my particular NAS (a Synology). For H.265 video’s, I did discover an incompatibility with my NAS’s Onvif operation, which only supported H.264. The fix was to force the R5 into H.264 mode using the Foscam App (a side-effect of the “NVR advance setting”) to get around my NAS’s limitation. I wanted to point this out in case other Onvif users run into it.* SOFTWARE: There are two pieces off software you might use, the Foscam App and their VMS desktop utility. For many users the App is probably all that is needed. If you are an advanced user, there is a good chance you will need to use their VMS software as some of the advanced features are onlyaccessible using VMS. The App is well organized and intuitive.* CLOUD SERVICE: I only used the free trial plan which makes alarm based clip view really convenient. Note that you get a 30-day free trial, after which it becomes a paid service. You still have free recording options after the free trial expires, notably an a micro-SD card or NAS.

Okay camera, very disappointing software
I bought this mainly to alert me when packages were delivered so I could grab them before they got stolen; I also wanted to track animals (mostly feral cats to catch for a trap-neuter-release program). The camera takes okay photos but the software is a mess and rendered it useless for my purposes. It wasn’t able to detect a single delivery person, and it only detected me walking in front of it about half the time. I received so many alerts because it would trigger on falling snow, but the next day it wouldn’t detect any of the animals or people that walked through that snow. The PC software and the Android app don’t completely match up, so some settings from the app show up differently on PC – while some settings on PC don’t show at all in the app. Zone detection didn’t work at all – if enabled it wouldn’t detect anything, period. There are spelling mistakes throughout the PC software, and conflicting descriptions in the app, which didn’t instill much confidence that the developers were staying regular on updates. But I finally gave up and returned it after contacting customer support – after a night of heavy snow, and a day of people and animals walking through it all without a single event detected by the camera, customer support’s response was for me to hand over the password for my account/device and the *specific times* of all the missed events – not seeming to understand that if it weren’t for the disturbed snow, I wouldn’t have known that things were being missed. I should have paid more attention to all the negative reviews about this camera.
